Last week we threw a lot of information about what the game was, who we are, and more brief information about our project. This week, we wanted to go more in depth on the gameplay inside of Mythos. If you've played other popular card games like Hearthstone, Magic: The Gathering Arena, etc. Then you should have no problem picking up our games mechanics. Our development team has found a lot of inspiration from these games, and we have built new mechanics on top of them.
First up, lets talk about the board, which we briefly mentioned in our our last post as being 2 rows, with 5 spots to place cards in each row. One unique aspect about Mythos, is how we will be utilizing card placement on the board. Players will take turns placing creatures, artifacts, and spells, which can be used as soon as you place the card. Meaning you are allowed to attack your opponent immediately after placing a card. You must be careful with your placement however, as the first row is referred to as the melee zone, meaning only melee creatures may be placed here, while ranged creatures must be placed in the back. Don't forget about your artifacts and spells, these cards take up a slot on the board as well, and have a variety of effects on the outcome of a battle.
Playing Cards
At the beginning of the game, the player who goes first will draw 3 cards, while the player going second draws 4, both players are allowed to trade in only one card before the game begins.
Each card has a mana cost, and each round you will have a certain amount of mana (starting with 1, and gradually working up to 10). In order to place a card, you need to have the necessary amount of mana, which is specified on each card.
The above image is some concept art for what one of our playing cards might look like. Notable information found on these cards includes: monster name, mana cost (blue circles), faction (the horns in this example), attack, defense, and abilities (melee, ranged, piercing, etc). Our goal is to create visually stunning cards that you'll want to collect, while still displaying useful information to the player.
You may have noticed the icons on the creature card, these are the creatures abilities. We have a wide range of abilities planned, and you'll have to wait to see what they are, but for now, just know that these abilities can make your creatures more powerful, but will also cost mana in order to activate.
How To Win
Once you place your cards down, you want to attack your enemy, however, they will be defended by their creatures, so you must play tactically to attack both the opponent and the opponents army, neglecting their army will leave you open to a swarm of attacks.
We know this was a pretty quick crash course, but if you're interested in learning more about how to play, or want in depth instructions on how to play, visit the following page.
